Film review : King Kong

Ann Darrow is a cricket ball. There is a point in the movie where every slight action of everything in the film is motivated by desire for Ann Darrow. The dinosaurs want to eat her, desperately, the insects want her, every single creature along the evolutionary timeline wants a piece of her. The giant ape wants her for his toy, Jack Driscoll wants her, the savages stole her. Every man on the ship is out to rescue her even the recalcitrant captain keeps turning up at the critical moments with a changed heart. Perhaps it is only the film maker Denham who remains oblivious to her, his cricket ball is only the film. The saddest part of the movie is the destruction of his camera. But Darrow, she speeds through the film with all the attention of a cricket ball through a test match, over a green field. No one in the stadium is untouched by the movement (the scantily clad, sexily muddied, humid jungle movement) of the girl and subsequently they all feel the need to exert a control over it, to possess it in some form. There’s a point where it all changes and the men start to desire the ape instead of the girl – they take their eye off the ball. Its Denham’s influence. He no longer has a film and his desire needs to shift – somehow, with it, the desire of the entire crew shifts too, except for Kong and Driscoll. From that point on its just not cricket.

brett lee’s summer

My favourite part of the AB medal last night came at the very end of the evening when Brett Lee was officially presented with the Summer. All throughout the season the comments have been repeating themselves endlessly, mostly from Mark Nicholas: This is Brett Lee’s summer. This is Brett Lee’s summer. This is Brett Lee’s summer. This is Brett Lee’s summer. These comments accrued to such a degree that Cricket Australia was left with no option but to legitimise the claims being made on Brett’s behalf. Fittingly it was Mark Nicholas himself that made the presentation, declaring “The 05/06 summer is henceforth in the possession of Brett Lee – careful Bing it may be a little warm.” Brett is said to be very happy with his new season and intends to try and attain the complete set of 4 before auctioning the collection to raise money for charity.

VB series totem tennis

Took Boonie up on his offer of a game of totem tennis after the cricket last night. For a little guy who’s been so keen all summer to have a whack at the felt he really isn’t much chop. He’s way too short to begin with and his arms don’t offer any extension on his limit altitudes. Barely reached a ball all night. I beat him easy. After the game, on Boonie’s suggestion, we headed down to the pub and downed the odd bevy together. Give the bloke some credit, he really wears his losses well. Reckons he might even go another hit after the AB medal tonight if I’m up for handing out another trouncing.
