day 5

husseys zinc

at the end of 5 long days finally for the first time this summer i get to sit down with a beer and watch some test cricket. seems to have transported to the waca seems australia are in the doldrums but putting on a last gasp little resistance firing glimmers of hope claras innings was a flicker counter attacking attractive aggression rock back n smash but his intensity went unrewarded the freedom with which he was playing left him loose outside off n he dragged 1 on. finns deliveries were leaping viciously off lengths often far too short but when they were up they had the wagtails hopping reactions were on. watsons reactions were on. the retravision hoardings induced a feeling of nostalgia but the nostalgia inspired was being defined in the moment – the hoardings were stating something nicely unforgettable i was remembering

pink experiment day 2

pinkwatching hayden and hussey struggle yesterday – to witness a creature actually truly struggle, to see every grimace of concentration and modulation of approach all the attempts to figure something out seeing them expending every effort and all energy on the struggle – i was watching movements entirely to do with faith.

the 30s that each made took every little piece of life from the batsmen and every piece of assistance they were able to harness from outside neither could have possibly scored another run

the knight of faith probably by mistake or by chance (without intention) makes himself higher than the outside surpassing the ethical the universal. faith begins where thinking leaves off Рhayden and hussey found themselves firmly entrenched within consideration. what their team needs from them, what to do to deliver it, how to engage with the south africans on favourable terms what terms should they accept. hayden and hussey were full of consideration. hayden has in the past been a very considerate batsman but all that was under consideration then was the ball and its area. the ball is a figure that needs to be dwelt on far more extensively – warne now god he is the ball of the century. to consider only the ball is perhaps the key to faith to make a move into the infinite take yourself beyond a position of equality with the ball to a position of lording it over the ball the giant sorcerer emperor hayden once was

border gavaskar 2nd test – day 4

a test for the ages with it all. great cricket, great controversy after great controversy. controversies that reach to the limits of human existence, thowing into question law and language – the basics. a double abandoned cartwheel side roll (that harbhajan can be one funny little monkey at times!) there’s been an awful lot of talk going on outside this game of cricket about things said within the game – extraordinary considering all thats ever talked about within a game of crickets kfc.

at the beginning of the cricket show (during the lunchbreak) s odonnell said “i wish we could spend the whole show talking about harbhajans double side roll but instead we have to talk about the controversy over what he said to roy symonds.” undoubtedly the most intelligent sentiment s odonnell has ever expressed. what a great cricket show it could have been!! surely the double abandoned cartwheel side roll should exonerate harbhajan from any charges? a positive, giving atonement rather than the

punitive.

the super slow motion highlights of 10dulkars innings yesterday (i didn’t get to see any of it) were probably the most beautiful things ive ever seen

the period of play leading up to and immediately following haydens incredibly bold decision to start reverse sweeping harbhajan was probably the best period of test cricket ive seen since maybe the first session of the first ashes test 2005. everything was so tight, the bowling was threatening, hussey and hayden were tight and nervous, the sweep shot was being severely challenged (jaques had fallen that way – australia were fragile). the reverse sweep was a stroke of genius that changed the game almost immediately. somewhat blinded by the sheer audaciousness of the act kumble changed the field far to rapidly. hayden and hussey carefully pounced.

adelaide oval forever – day 5 : re-entry

hours now after the end of the test match and im struggling to readjust to life outside the adelaide oval. theres still damp laundry in the machine that i must have put on this morning though i dont remember it. the dishes haven’t been done since day 1. i want that feeling of euphoria at the end of a great test match to last forever. i haven’t eaten & there is no food in the flat but food isnt much of a necessity in comparison to test cricket.

there’s a negative presence in the england squad and he will certainly be dropped my fear is that its too late today the negativity was already festering & spreading in the adelaide heat

flintoffs face as he ran in to bowl his final few overs of the match was devastatingly sad to behold. he was in all sorts of pain ankle and heart busting himself to keep his head up and carry his team boldly onward in a situation where boldness was as scarce as water.

in these wide spaces i reflect upon the view

read the opposition

20 out of 20

Oh what irresistible fun the 20 20 match turned out to be the other night. What an inane giggly joy it brought about and sustained (for at least 23 or 24 overs out of the 40). How splendid the Australians looked in their grey or gun metal or … hell the uniforms were SILVER. The intense moment of joy when one realises it actually says MARTO on the back of Marto‘s shirt, or PUNTER on Punter‘s… the intrigue of trying to discover who SARFRAZ really is, or the daytime identity of the cleverly disguised MR CRICKET

I think it’s the same or a similiar joy (as least quantatively) to the one Punter antcipates so earnestly in the field (the joy of the sharp piece of fielding, the direct hit or the impossibly quick snare). This adrenalin filled anticipation was made palpable by the superb socio/psychological experiment carried out by Channel 9 whereby the team’s captains were wired for sound and briefly at points throughout the commentary were asked to answer questions from the commentating team. Ponting was prowling about like a hungry tiger bouncing up and down and walking backwards and forwards and in cirlces, waiting for the ball to be delivered and something great to happen, talking at 160 km/hr.

The only disappointment of the evening was that Ice Cold 3000 didn’t get to play. It was unfathomable really, the high drama of 20 20 would seem perfect for a player with Nel’s professional theatrical experience. He should have at least had a mic, and a camera following whatever sneaky, dastardly tricks he was getting up to while everyone else was thoroughly distracted by the game.
